Bite Into an Ice Cream Sandwich

The newest version of the Android operating system may be the tastiest yet. We have had Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb. Now Google has developed its latest version and aptly named it Ice Cream Sandwich in honor of their traditional dessert and alphabetical namesakes.

Most people view the Android platform as either the option you get when purchasing prepaid phone plans or the preferred system of techies and computer geniuses. Google wants to change the public’s opinion of their mobile operating system by implementing more user friendly features and utilities. Google has gained market dominance in the cell phone industry because their Android operating system is very open to developers and available on more phones than any other platform. Only die-hard users ever clamor about the power and capabilities that Android gives them. Most people use it just because they were offered a cheaper device than an iPhone. In order to unlock the full potential of the operating’s system; users must read online tutorial websites and instruction manuals to get the most out of widgets and apps.

Google has tried to reinvent their platform with Ice Cream Sandwich. They are looking to make their platform more consistent over all devices like the Windows Phone or the iPhone’s iOS 5. Instead of relying on buttons for navigation, they now appear on the screen and adjust depending on which way you tilt the device. Instead of being forced to view mobile websites, you will be able to switch from browser view and mobile view with the new browser. You can also use the Google powered cloud to save bookmarks to your Chrome browser to your phone.

Everything on Ice Cream Sandwich is customizable. You can delete or add any application you want and have direct control over where it goes. The Gmail application is also much more intuitive, more organized, responds to touching better, and is available both on and offline. The head of Android’s user experience team, Matias Duarte, stated that people were not becoming emotionally involved with the Android operating system. The team at Google conducted vast amounts of research and designed Ice Cream Sandwich in order to resonate with users to get the same feeling that iPhone users have with their product. He also said that the goal of the new operating system was to make user’s lives easier and not more complicated.

Google already has market dominance with their Android operating system, but wants to steal the hearts away from people who have dedicated themselves to iOS. It is almost safe to say that Google is trying to steal Apple’s girlfriend by using an Ice Cream Sandwich, but in a completely inanimate way.
