Adobe Flash For Ice Cream Sandwich

Adobe announced recently that it planned to stop developing its mobile Flash Player. However, these plans appear to be short lived as plans are in the works to create a version of Adobe Flash for phones running on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

Android And Adobe

Adobe reversed course and stated they will release one more version of their widely used Flash Player for mobile browsing. This will of course support Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. Additionally, Abode will release one more version of the Flash Linux Porting Kit. Plans are for both to be released before the end of 2011.

After these versions are released, Adobe will not create any more updated versions of the Flash Player. They will, however, provide critical bug fixes and updates to security. This means that once Google comes up with an update in the future for Ice Cream Sandwich, there’s an extreme likelihood that those devices will not be able to support Flash. Research in Motion, creator of BlackBerry actually licensed the Flash source code from Adobe. They are working on their own version of Flash for their mobile phones

Adobe’s departure from Flash player development is in an effort to refocus their efforts. They will instead adapt Flash as a development tool for HTML5 as well as mobile apps. Adobe will continue producing their Flash Player for use on PCs. However, some believe it’s only a matter of time before this goes by the wayside as well.

Some believe Apple’s decision to stop producing the mobile version of Flash was in deference to Apple. Apple has refused to install Flash on its iPhone. Unlike their competitors, Apple sees Flash as slowing down the system and wants to avoid this at all costs. Apple devices are instead using HTML5 rather than the Flash Player.
