Owners of the Motorola RAZR are going to get a new tech update which will include a list of new and improved features including call performance as well as Bluetooth connectivity.

The Motorola RAZR, revamping the iconic brand released more than a decade ago, proved to be a late contender for phone of the year in 2011. A sleek external design combined with a powerful processor under the hood ensured it quickly became a contender for Samsung’s Galaxy S2 and HTC’s top device the Sensation XE. Motorola replaced its clamshell design with a compact device just 7.1mm thick and weighing 127 grams. A 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display offers crisp and vivid images with sharp video playback with a screen resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. . Under the hood it comes with a 1.2 GHz processor and runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, which disappointed some as it launched at the same time as Android 4.0 Ice Cream sandwich and Motorola has been taken over by Google. It also boasts an 8 megapixel camera, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of inbuilt storage.
The device won Motorola positive reviews. T3 called it an “impressive, high-end, well-functioning handset”, the Guardian says it has one of “the fastest brains on the market” although it had some problems with its interface and design. Engadget says the handset “is just physically stunning” and that it is “ready to run with the big boys”. While the reviews are largely positive there is a sense that while it is a good looking and powerful phone it is still not quite in a position to compete against the high amount of mobile phone deals for the likes of the S2 or the iPhone 4S.
Now European owners of the handset are due to get a new update, 651.73.30 to be precise. The update was received by US owners with Verizon before Christmas and now Motorola has decided to extend it across Europe.
The list of new features, or improvements, include an enhancement to the camera app and an update to the Smart Actions feature with a new ‘Motion Detection’ feature. The Evernote application, which is a version of an Open Source reminder or notepad programme, is now pre-installed. New security features have been added in line with the latest Google update as well as an improved call performance and Bluetooth connectivity which is linked with phone stability. There are also general improvements to Wi-Fi performance and stability.
Motorola have issued a guide for those updating their RAZR handset. They advise the phone should have at least 50% charge and should be connected to a Wi-Fi network. If a user has received a notification message for the update they simply need to press “Download” and then “Install now” once the software is downloaded. The phone then restarts automatically and the update is complete. Those who don’t receive a notification message can still find it in the Settings/About Phone/System Updates/Download where they can select and install the new software.
The first countries to receive the update will be the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain along with several others.
